# Benjamin Zhuang, Software Engineer

> Software engineer and master's student at Carnegie Mellon University. Builds web applications, AI products, and backend systems, and studies the systems underneath them. Previously at Microsoft on Teams Rooms.

I'm Benjamin Zhuang, a master's student at Carnegie Mellon. My projects range from multiplayer games and learning tools to databases and background job systems. Previously at Microsoft, I worked on people identification for Teams Rooms. I'm looking for software engineering roles where I can keep building and learning with a team.

## Selected work (15 case studies)

- [Poreia](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/poreia/index.md): AI travel planner. A travel planner that turns one sentence into a multi-day itinerary with costs, a map, and an editable day-by-day plan. The model's answer has to pass a schema and a destination check before anyone sees it.
- [Tartan Tickets](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/tartan-tickets/index.md): AI agent safety. A course ticketing platform with Scotty, an LLM assistant that looks up orders, buys tickets, and issues refunds through tool calls. I built the refund capability and the guards around it: the model can ask for a refund, but it cannot decide one.
- [Relay](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/relay/index.md): Distributed job processing. A Go and PostgreSQL job queue with worker leases, retries, and a recorded crash-recovery experiment. Built to study what happens between accepting a job and finishing it.
- [Handpick](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/handpick/index.md): iOS photo app. An iPhone and iPad app for clearing a cluttered photo library one photo at a time. Keep it, delete it, or sort it into an album, and nothing leaves the library until you confirm the batch.
- [Companion](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/companion/index.md): 3D collectibles app. An iPhone app that turns a photo of a real object into a textured 3D model to spin, keep, and arrange in a personal collection. A small API hands the photo to an image-to-3D model and converts the result for iOS.
- [PPE Motion Analysis](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/ppe-motion/index.md): Motion-capture analytics. A local tool that turns Xsens motion capture into repeatable comparisons between protective-equipment designs: the same subject and the same task, with one piece of gear changed. A command line and a browser workspace drive the same services.
- [Splendor](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/splendor/index.md): Real-time multiplayer. A browser version of Splendor with multiplayer lobbies, game rules, chat, and an AI advisor. A team project with tests from individual rules through browser play.
- [AlgoExplorer](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/algo-explorer/index.md): AI learning tool. Step through algorithms, inspect their state, and ask an AI tutor about the frame on screen. Code, explanations, and playback share the same workspace.
- [SimpleDB](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/simple-db/index.md): Database internals. A Java database course project with query operators, a buffer pool, page locks, and transaction handling. The code makes the storage work behind a query visible.
- [PetClinic / DevOps](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/petclinic-devops/index.md): Build and deployment. A DevOps course extension of Spring PetClinic, with Jenkins builds, Ansible deployment, security checks, and Prometheus/Grafana monitoring.
- [333gle](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/333gle/index.md): Search systems. A C++ course project connecting HTTP parsing, sockets, a thread pool, and indexed document search. Includes tests for the server's lower-level components.
- [xv6](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/xv6/index.md): Operating systems. Operating-systems coursework using xv6 on RISC-V, with shell, utility, and allocator lab configuration in the repository.
- [Cypress](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/cypress/index.md): Workspace prototype. A workspace prototype built with Next.js, Supabase, and Drizzle, with account access, workspace creation, and dashboard navigation.
- [LeetCode Clone](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/leetcode-clone/index.md): Developer learning. A coding-practice interface with problem browsing, an editor, examples, and submission feedback. Built with Next.js, TypeScript, and Firebase.
- [ClipHop](https://benjaminnnnnn.github.io/portfolio/cliphop/index.md): Social video. A short-video application with profiles, topic browsing, uploads, and reactions, using Sanity for content and OAuth for sign-in.
